Find answers to common questions about Life After Me, the secure digital legacy and estate planning platform. Learn how we protect your data, how Trusted Appointees work, pricing details, and more.

When you pass away, your Trusted Appointees receive secure access to the documents and instructions you’ve chosen. This may include:

  • Legal documents (wills, powers of attorney)

  • Financial accounts, insurance policies, and tax files

  • Funeral wishes and last messages

  • Digital assets (crypto, online accounts, social media logins)

Instead of searching through paperwork or contacting dozens of institutions, your loved ones have one central, organized place—saving time, money, and emotional burden.

Life After Me is a secure online digital legacy management platform where individuals and families can safely store essential documents, passwords, financial details, funeral wishes, and personal memories. All files are encrypted and hosted on Microsoft Azure (EU servers). Trusted Appointees (family, friends, or advisors) can access only what you assign—either during life or after your passing. This ensures your loved ones avoid stress, bureaucracy, or financial loss due to missing documents.

Yes. Security and privacy are our top priorities:

  • ISO 27001 certified information security management

  • GDPR compliant – you remain the owner of your data at all times

  • End-to-end encryption during upload, storage, and access

  • Multi-factor authentication (2FA) via SMS/email/authenticator app

  • Regular penetration testing by ethical hackers

  • Hosted exclusively on Microsoft Azure EU data centers

No one—not even our team—can view your stored documents.

Anything you want to protect and pass on. The platform provides structured folders for easier organization:

  • Identification: Passports, ID cards, certificates

  • Legal & Financial: Wills, tax returns, insurance policies, bank accounts

  • Digital & Social: Passwords, crypto wallets, online accounts

  • Personal: Funeral wishes, letters, photos, videos, music

  • Business: Contracts, succession plans, shareholder agreements

This prevents lost bank accounts, forgotten crypto wallets, or disputes over funeral wishes

  • Trusted Appointees (up to 5): Family or close friends who can access your chosen files after death (e.g., spouse, children, executor).

  • Experts (up to 3): Professionals like notaries, financial advisors, or accountants who can upload/manage documents for you while you’re alive.

This hybrid system ensures both your personal wishes and professional affairs are handled smoothly

Your Trusted Appointee uploads a death certificate. We verify it with the municipality (for NL) or relevant authority. Once validated, only the information you marked “accessible after death” becomes available. To prevent abuse, all appointees receive notifications, and you can revoke access at any time before death.

Yes. Without preparation, families often lose access to:

  • Bank accounts with unknown balances

  • Life insurance policies that go unclaimed

  • Crypto wallets without recovery keys

  • Tax or debt obligations that create surprises

Life After Me centralizes these details, preventing costly mistakes and ensuring heirs can quickly access or settle accounts.

Getting started is simple:

  1. Create an account – sign up with your details and secure login.

  2. Upload documents – drag & drop files, photos, videos, or notes into pre-set folders.

  3. Assign Trusted Appointees – give selected people access now, later, or after death.

  4. Update anytime – add new documents, change wishes, or revoke access.

See our How it Works page

You can begin with a free trial and upgrade to Premium for full features, including Trusted Appointee and Expert access.

Yes. The platform is fully mobile-friendly and device-agnostic. You can log in from your smartphone, iPad, or laptop, and upload or manage documents on the go. This is especially helpful for quickly scanning receipts, IDs, or contracts directly into your account.

Almost all common file formats are supported, including:

  • Documents: Word, Excel, PDF

  • Images: JPG, PNG, TIFF

  • Videos: MP4, MOV

  • Audio files: MP3, WAV
Just keep in mind your storage limit per plan. Larger files like long videos may require a Premium upgrade.

To maximize value:

  • Complete your profile and designate Trusted Appointees.

  • Organize files into clear folders (legal, financial, funeral wishes, memories).

  • Upload proactively: wills, insurance, ID, property deeds, crypto wallets.

  • Leave messages: write personal notes or upload videos for family.

  • Notify appointees that your account exists, so they know where to look.

This ensures your account becomes a single source of truth for everything important.

  • Trusted Appointee: A family member or friend you want to access your files (up to 5 people). Their role is personal and emotional — they receive your legacy and memories.

  • Expert: A professional (lawyer, notary, advisor) who can upload and manage documents (up to 3). Their role is practical — ensuring legal, tax, and business files are up to date.

This combination covers both personal inheritance and professional continuity.

Yes. Life After Me is a Dutch company and all data is hosted on Microsoft Azure EU servers. This means your files are covered by European data protection laws (GDPR). You remain the owner of your data, and you can delete your account and all files at any time.

No. Payments are processed via Stripe, a leading secure payment gateway. Life After Me never stores your credit card or banking information. In the Netherlands, you can also pay via iDEAL.

Technically yes, but we don’t recommend it. Each account is designed for one individual, since:

  • Mixing files can create confusion.

  • 2FA and login details become complicated.

  • Private messages meant for one person could be exposed to another.

Best practice: each partner has their own account, with mutual Trusted Appointee access.

  • Forgot password: Use the “Forgot password” link, and reset it via email.

  • Forgot username: Your username is always your registered email address.

For extra protection, Life After Me uses multi-factor authentication (2FA) at every login.

Yes. You remain in control:

  • Delete documents: Select and remove individual or multiple files.

  • Delete account: From your profile, permanently erase your account and all stored data. Billing stops at the end of your subscription cycle.

Once deleted, files cannot be recovered.

Access is only granted when:

  1. A Trusted Appointee uploads a death certificate.

  2. Our team verifies it with the relevant authority (e.g., Dutch municipalities).

  3. Only the files marked “after death” are unlocked.

This prevents unauthorized access and ensures compliance with local laws.

When you pass away, your Trusted Appointees (up to 5) are notified. They must confirm your passing with a valid death certificate. Once verified, only the documents and memories you marked for “after death” become available.

  • Appointees receive secure access with a time delay you set (default 2 hours).

  • You and other appointees are notified, preventing abuse.

  • The account is automatically closed after one month unless you chose to keep it open as a legacy archive.

Only you. Passwords are encrypted end-to-end and even Life After Me staff cannot read them. You may, however, grant a Trusted Appointee access so they can close or manage your accounts after your death (e.g., social media, online banking, email).

We recommend starting with the essentials:

  • Legal & financial: wills, powers of attorney, bank accounts, insurance, tax files.

  • Identification: passports, ID cards, marriage/divorce certificates.

  • Digital assets: crypto wallets, social media logins, email accounts.

  • Funeral wishes: preferred ceremony, music, readings, invitees.

  • Personal legacy: family photos, letters, voice notes, or video messages.

By organizing these, you give loved ones immediate clarity.

Experts are professionals (lawyers, financial planners, notaries, accountants) you invite to your account. They can upload documents directly to specific folders, ensuring important files are always up to date.

  • Limit: up to 3 Experts.

  • Benefit: you build a joint dossier with your advisor, improving both your security and the quality of advice you receive.

No. To ensure security and consistency for Trusted Appointees, all users work with the same pre-set folder structure. This avoids confusion and guarantees safe, predictable access. However, you can upload any file type and use descriptions and notes for personalization.

  • Free Trial: test the platform with limited storage.

  • Standard: secure storage of essential files.

  • Premium: full features, including Trusted Appointees and Expert uploads.

Most members choose the annual Premium plan for best value. Pricing is transparent inside your account under “Manage my Plan.”

Yes. Families often lose track of valuable assets:

  • Bank accounts left unclaimed.

  • Crypto wallets without keys.

  • Life insurance policies unknown to heirs.

Life After Me prevents this by securely storing and indexing these details so heirs can access them immediately.

Life After Me does not mediate disputes. Each appointee acts independently based on the permissions you set. To avoid conflict, clearly document your wishes and consult a lawyer for formal estate planning.

Currently, there is no visible audit trail for Trusted Appointees or Experts. However, all activity is securely logged in the backend for support and security purposes.

No. Trusted Appointees are only notified during trigger events such as account unlocking after death. Routine updates remain private unless you share them directly.

Life After Me is officially ISO 27001 certified — the international gold standard for information security management. This proves we use strict protocols for risk management, encryption, and continuous monitoring.
Additionally:

  • GDPR compliant (EU privacy law)

  • Extended Validation SSL certificate (green padlock in browser)

  • Regular penetration testing by ethical hackers

  • Microsoft Azure hosting with EU-based servers
Together, these certifications confirm our platform is independently verified and trusted for your most sensitive data.

To protect your legacy, access is only given after:

  1. A Trusted Appointee or Expert uploads a valid death certificate.

  2. Our support team verifies the document with the relevant authority (e.g., Dutch municipalities).

  3. Once validated, only the files marked as “after death” become visible.
This ensures no one gains access prematurely or without legal proof.

Life After Me cannot mediate disputes, but it reduces the risk of conflict by:

  • Providing one clear, organized source of truth.

  • Documenting wishes in writing (funeral, wills, digital access).

  • Assigning specific appointees with defined roles.
This avoids the common “confusion and arguments” that often arise when documents are missing.

Your files are secured by multiple layers:

  • End-to-end encryption during upload and storage.

  • Your password creates the encryption key, making files unreadable without it.

  • Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) with SMS, email, or authenticator app.

  • Microsoft Azure Cloud with EU-based servers and state-of-the-art security.
Even Life After Me staff cannot access your documents — only you and your chosen appointees can.

From your profile, you can permanently delete your account at any time. This will:

  • Erase all files, documents, and wishes from our system.

  • Stop billing at the end of your subscription period.

  • Remove all appointee access.
Once deleted, recovery is impossible — giving you complete control over your data.

Unlike Google Drive, Dropbox, or iCloud, Life After Me is designed specifically for digital legacy planning:

  • Built-in Trusted Appointee and Expert roles.

  • Pre-structured folders for estate planning, taxes, insurance, crypto, funeral wishes, and memories.

  • Death verification process before unlocking access.

  • Certified GDPR, ISO 27001, and Azure-based security.
It’s not just storage — it’s a complete inheritance and legacy platform.

A will covers legal and financial inheritance, but it often does not include:

  • Passwords and digital accounts (banking, crypto, social media).

  • Personal wishes (funeral details, letters, videos, memories).

  • Administrative instructions (tax files, insurance, utilities).
Life After Me complements your will by organizing everything else that matters, ensuring your loved ones have both the legal and personal information they need when the time comes.

A digital legacy (or digital inheritance) includes everything you leave behind online when you die: social media profiles, email accounts, cloud storage, digital photos or documents, crypto wallets, domain names, and even chat histories or online licenses. It’s modern estate planning that goes beyond physical property to include intangible but valuable assets.

A digital will specifically covers your online presence—your digital accounts, passwords, and preferences—while a traditional will usually addresses physical assets and legal inheritance. Digital wills often include instructions for handling social media, email, digital purchases, and are increasingly recognized in estate planning.

Your digital executor (or legacy contact) should be someone you trust with both your wishes and technology. They may differ from your will's executor and could be a family member, friend, or advisor tasked with executing online instructions like memorializing or deleting accounts.

Policies vary:

  • Apple allows setting a Legacy Contact to access photos and files (excluding passwords and DRM-protected content).

  • Google’s Inactive Account Manager enables sharing or auto-deletion after inactivity.

  • Facebook/Instagram allow memorializing via a legacy contact; deletion requires proof of death.

  • TikTok and others also offer memorialization or account deactivation options.

This patchwork adds urgency to using a dedicated legacy platform.

Digital inheritance faces obstacles like terms-of-service restrictions, privacy laws, copyright limits, and lack of legal clarity. Many online assets can’t simply be passed on, and laws are still evolving globally.

Frequent updates are essential—every time you create a new account, subscribe to services, or change passwords. This ensures your inventory and instructions remain accurate and complete.

Yes. Some tools offer automation: for example, services that prompt you to confirm you're alive (using emails), triggering posthumous actions if unanswered. This ensures your legacy executes even if you're unable to initiate it.

A digital executor is someone legally authorized to manage your online accounts and digital assets after you pass away—complementing your traditional will. Naming one ensures your digital life (social media, subscriptions, crypto, and more) is handled securely and according to your wishes. Incorporating digital executorship enhances clarity for your heirs and supports smoother legacy management.

Start by listing all your online accounts (email, cloud storage, social media, subscriptions, crypto wallets, digital media). Note service names, usernames, and what should happen to each (delete, memorialize, transfer). This inventory becomes a “digital will” that guides family or appointees clearly and efficiently.

Your digital legacy plan should include:

  • A complete list of accounts and assets (social media, blogs, cloud services)

  • Clear instructions for each (delete, memorialize, pass on)

  • Login info stored securely (e.g., Life After Me encrypted vault)

  • A designated digital executor or Trusted Appointee to act on your behalf

Beyond documents, you can store voice or video messages, memoir notes, favorite music or photos, and any personal reflections. Life After Me’s secure vault lets you preserve your story and values—creating a heartfelt legacy, not just a file archive.

Yes. In Life After Me, you can mark each file or account detail with specific instructions: some can be deleted, others archived or shared. This granular control helps you honor what matters most—and remove what doesn’t—so your legacy remains intentional.

While social platforms (like Facebook or Apple) let you assign legacy contacts, those are limited to specific platforms. Life After Me offers a universal, encrypted solution across all digital assets—email, banking, crypto, legal files, subscriptions—handled via a secure, integrated vault.

Though Life After Me simplifies digital legacy planning, combining it with legal advice is wise—especially for wills, estate planning, and digital inheritance laws in your jurisdiction. A digital executor paired with your legal executor offers comprehensive peace of mind.

It’s best to review and update your digital legacy plan annually—or whenever you add new accounts, change passwords, or update documents. Even better: Life After Me’s dashboard and Expert roles facilitate easy, secure updates as your digital life evolves.

You can leave a “Letter of Instruction” or personal note in Life After Me explaining where things are, what your wishes are, and how to use the vault. This makes the process less stressful and more intuitive for your Trusted Appointees.

Absolutely. While hosted in EU-based Microsoft Azure servers (ensuring GDPR compliance), Life After Me is accessible globally. Users outside Europe still benefit from end-to-end encryption, Trusted Appointee roles, and death-verification workflows adapted to local norms.

The concept of “Swedish death cleaning” involves decluttering to reduce the burden on loved ones. Digitally, this means organizing and consolidating your files, photos, and accounts. Life After Me lets you centralize your digital legacy—reducing stress for your family and ensuring meaning is preserved.

Yes. Life After Me is not only for after death—it’s also designed for life events such as critical illness, disability, or accidents. By securely storing medical records, insurance details, and legal documents in advance, your Trusted Appointees can quickly step in to manage affairs if you are unable to. This ensures your wishes are respected and your family avoids unnecessary stress.
